S-African prosecutors given until October to submit their final arguments in inquest investigating death of Inkosi Albert Luthuli
Advocates Ncedile Dunywa, Annah Chuene, Siyabonga Ngcobo, and Xolani Msimango led a series of testimonies beginning April 14 at the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Witnesses included South African Police Service members, forensic experts, crime scene analysts, medical professionals, anti-apartheid activists, and Luthuli’s family and friends. Former justice minister Jeff Radebe also testified.
Closing arguments are expected between October 13 and 16. The inquest has drawn significant public interest, particularly from Luthuli’s relatives and ANC supporters, as it seeks to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the iconic leader’s death.
Luthuli, who served as president-general of the African National Congress (ANC), died at age 69 in Stanger Hospital after sustaining severe injuries near the Mvoti River railway bridge. The inquest revealed concerns over inadequate medical treatment following his injuries, further fueling suspicions about the official account of his death.
Meanwhile, the same court has postponed the inquest into the 1981 murder of fellow anti-apartheid activist Griffiths Mxenge. The delay, now set for October 9, is to allow former apartheid police officers implicated in his killing time to secure state-funded legal representation.
