Ghana Urges Citizens to Avoid Unnecessary Travel to South Africa
According to a statement from Ghanaian authorities, groups opposed to immigration have been involved in a series of incidents directed at African migrants. Reports indicate that the attacks have led to injuries, looting, damage to property, and the temporary closure of businesses owned by foreign nationals.
The government advised citizens to carefully assess travel plans and avoid unnecessary visits to South Africa until conditions improve and security concerns are addressed.
Ghanaians currently living in South Africa were encouraged to stay in close communication with their country's diplomatic mission to receive security information and access consular support when needed.
Officials also revealed that diplomatic engagement with South African authorities is underway. According to reports, South Africa's senior diplomatic representative in Accra was called in for discussions regarding the incidents. The matter has also been brought before the African Union, while preparations are being made to support affected Ghanaian citizens and consider evacuation measures if circumstances require them.
Ghana further appealed to the South African government to take effective steps to protect foreign communities residing in the country and restore stability in areas affected by the violence.
Reports indicate that anti-immigrant attacks have been occurring in various regions of South Africa since April. Businesses owned by migrants have been among the primary targets, with several people injured and some foreign residents relocated from affected locations for safety reasons.
Last month, Ghana formally requested that the situation be included on the agenda of the African Union's 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, which is scheduled to be held in El-Alamein, Egypt, from June 24 to June 27.
