Ghana Warns Citizens Against Travel to South Africa
Ghana's Foreign Ministry said Monday that organized anti-immigrant groups have been systematically targeting African foreign nationals, triggering a wave of violence that has left victims injured, businesses looted and shuttered, and personal property destroyed.
Ghanaian nationals currently in South Africa have been directed to maintain close contact with Ghana's High Commission for real-time security updates and access to consular support. The ministry made clear the advisory will remain in effect until conditions on the ground meaningfully improve.
Accra has not limited its response to warnings alone. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that South Africa's chargé d'affaires in Accra was formally summoned, the crisis was escalated to the African Union, and contingency measures — including possible evacuations — are being actively prepared for affected Ghanaian nationals. Diplomatic channels with South African authorities have also been engaged directly.
Ghana further called on Pretoria to take concrete action to guarantee the safety of African communities living within its borders and to restore public order without delay.
The violence, which has been reported across multiple regions of South Africa since April, has seen migrant-owned businesses bear the brunt of the attacks, forcing the evacuation of some foreign nationals from the worst-affected areas.
On the continental stage, Ghana last month formally requested that the crisis be placed on the agenda of the African Union's 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, scheduled to convene in El-Alamein, Egypt, from June 24–27 — a move signaling Accra's determination to hold South Africa accountable before its regional peers.
